January 2020
Dear, ,

It’s January, and if the lack of light this time of year leaves you feeling blue, you’re not alone. An estimated 10 million Americans suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Since we spend so much time indoors at work and at home, why not incorporate more daylight into a home redesign? Read more to learn the benefits of "daylighting" and the smartest ways to incorporate more sunshine into your daily living space.

At the end of 2019, we had the honor of receiving four awards from the Maryland Building Industry Association as a part of their 2019 MBIA Remodeling and Custom Building Awards of Excellence Program! To see photos of our recent award-winning projects, visit the blog here.

We hope 2020 is treating you well so far, and that you have an opportunity to soak up some sun this winter.

Sunlight: A Renewable Resource
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, daylighting, if properly done, saves both energy and money, which is a reason this design practice is trending now more than ever. With biophilic design also becoming popular, it’s worth acknowledging the role natural light can play in wellness. Rather than the constant glare (and buzzing) of fluorescent light fixtures, natural light changes patterns throughout the day, which is healthier for people’s natural rhythms, increasing an overall sense of well-being.

When renovating, remodeling, or having a new home built, consider incorporating daylighting into your home’s design. A good architect or builder will examine all of the factors making an impact on your home’s light, including the directional orientation of a room, the finishes where light will be reflected, and maximizing outdoor views.

Glass Walls: Benefits and Improved Efficiency

Glass walls, or large format, folding glass doors, are a big part of the natural light craze. Walls of glass have come a long way in terms of their quality and are more energy efficient than ever, allowing homeowners to combine free lighting with heating and cooling efficiency. Take advantage of floor-to-ceiling views and the modern aesthetic glass walls create. Using daylighting options as part of your home’s design incorporates the multifaceted benefits of energy-savings, biophilia, and views with a timeless trend you can enjoy for the lifetime of your home.
Skylights: Windows to Your Home's Soul
Some parts of a home may not be private enough for a wall of glass as a source of daylight; a skylight can be the perfect remedy for a lack of views, privacy, or a dark and stuffy room. Not only do some skylights have venting capabilities to improve indoor air quality in the home, but they can also serve as a centerpiece for ceilings, creating character and interest. Skylights tend to make a room appear larger than it is, and airy, bright spaces are inviting to just about everyone.
Gone are the days when a skylight over the bed meant waking up at first light, these days there are customized window covering solutions for skylights.

Smart Window Coverings for Ideal Light

In addition to having the ability to close the blinds on a bedroom skylight, there are now tons of options for Smart blinds, and digital blinds, for your home. Some motorized blinds are programmable and provide homeowners with the ability to automate the natural light in their homes. How many times have you thought about opening the blinds to let some light into your house, but then your hands were full, or you were distracted, and it never happened? Blinds that close while you’re at work can keep your home cooler in summer. Digital films can be controlled from a Smart phone to control the amount of light they allow in, and they can become opaque to provide privacy.

Whether you incorporate more, or larger, windows, glass walls, skylights, or custom window treatments into a home remodel, or new build, you will reap the benefits of more natural light. If you plan to sell your home, your space will be highly appealing to buyers due to an abundance of sunlight.
